When owning a potato cake reviewing service, you’re sure to receive a few recommendations. Some are several states over, some become top reviews (Kyabram Showgrounds Takeaway, we still get recommendations 6 months after our review), and some come from the heart. When you’re half an hour away, and a family member of an owner sends a request (and you have a day free), you put pedal to the metal and head in. Soon we were headed from Melbourne’s South East to Cranbourne, with a target on the mind.
On this Cranbourne sidestreet (Lurline Street), there are two fish and chip stores, but we had one in mind. I was soon in the door of Silver Mermaid Fish and Chips, Cranbourne, their inner decor tiled and reminiscent of a 90s fisho. It felt authentic, and I soon paid $1.40 per cake and waited quietly on a cushioned chair by the door. I was soon handed a paper-wrapped package by the attendant, and headed back to the car to sample the goods. Each morsel was covered with a very crisp, whispy batter that flaked across the surface each cake. They were obviously hand made, as the batter formed an uneven coating, pooling into veins of crunch that wandered the coating. Each bite was audible as it cracked through the batter, well cooked and generous in size. The centre consisted of a single layer of thin potato, which varied in size and fluffiness between cakes. They were well cooked, and as they were straight out of the fryer they featured a slightly oily texture. These discus chips were lightly dusted with chicken salt, and a freebie was included. One would be a snack, and two would be a meal
