Winter is when the real foundation work happens. Left to its own devices, a grape vine puts out wild growth in every direction (swipe to see the untamed 'before' chaos!).
By cane pruning, we carefully select only the healthiest canes and lay them along the fruiting wire, leaving short 2-bud spurs for renewal next year. It might look minimal now, but this precision work controls yield, ensures balance, and sets up maximum sun exposure for the upcoming vintage.
Great wine isn't just grown—it's crafted step by step, vine by vine. 🍷

Before Steels Gate was what you see today, it started with a simple, uncompromising vision: create a true sanctuary in the Yarra Valley.
We saw the region growing rapidly, with massive tour buses and rushed 45-minute wine tastings becoming the norm. We wanted the exact opposite.
Steels Gate was built by hand—literally—to be an authentic, unhurried haven. A place where the wine is 100% estate-grown, the food comes straight from our kitchen garden, and when you walk through the cellar door, you’re treated like a guest in our home, not a number on a clock.
No scripts. No wine snobbery. Just real passion, cool-climate winemaking, and space to breathe.

3. Follow Maroondah Highway until you reach Dixons Creek.
4. Turn onto Melba Highway (C726) and look for your destination along this route.
5. There is parking available on-site.
**By Public Transport:**
1. Take a train from Melbourne's Flinders Street Station to Lilydale Station on the Lilydale Line.
2. From Lilydale Station, transfer to a bus service that heads towards Healesville or Yarra Glen; check local schedules for specific routes that stop near Melba Highway.
3. Once you arrive at your stop, it may require a short walk to reach your final destination along Melba Highway.
