In 2016, two years before we signed the lease on this grand old dame, the seed for Carter Lovett was planted.

We had recently moved into Elsternwick and had our first born child. Fresh out of hospital, we cocooned our 10 day old baby in an oversized pram and decided to check out our local hood.

I was basking in the glow of new motherhood and exhaustion when Jimmy stopped along Glen Huntley Road and pointed at a majestic fawn-coloured corner building.

“That would make a great cafe,” he stated.

The building he was eying housed the much loved Child and Adult Toy Store for nearly 35 years. It was an icon of the area. There was no way Jimmy could get that site, I thought as we kept walking.

18 months later the building was listed for auction and Jimmy was there to see who purchased it. The owners of Child and Adult had decided to retire and so negotiations began.

So too, did the beginnings of Carter Lovett…

Summer menu launch and this classic dish is back. Crispy Skin Atlantic Salmon, raw asparagus and broccoli salad tossed in buttermilk dressing on a bed of silky macadamia cream. Paired with white wine and sun. Nothing better!

To get to the restaurant and cafe located on Glen Huntly Road in Melbourne, you can take public transportation via the train or tram. If you prefer to take the train, you can alight at the Glenhuntly Train Station and then walk along Glen Huntly Road for approximately 5 minutes to reach your destination.

Alternatively, if you prefer to travel by tram, you can take the Route 67 (Carnegie) tram and alight at Stop #60 (Glenhuntly Road/Elsternwick). From there, it's just a short walk to reach your destination.

If travelling by car, there are several parking options available including on-street parking along Glen Huntly Road as well as nearby side streets. There may also be public car parks in the area that you can utilise. Please ensure that you follow all parking regulations and restrictions when parking your vehicle.
