It's always a special full-circle experience when we're able to visit our producing partners and give them a bag of their coffee beans from the most recent season in our shops. This moment from last year was especially touching, watching the young children and grandchildren of Rwandan producer Anastase Minani inspect the coffee postcards featuring his photo with great pride and interest.
We're not alone in our deep respect and admiration for Anastase and his work. As one of the founding members of the dynamic cooperative, he is a leader and mentor to many in his community. Over 50 years into his career, he's still producing sweet and delicious coffees on his small farm – including the rich and syrupy espresso lot currently featured on our menu.

At Market Lane, we’re extremely lucky to work with, and be connected to, many, many extraordinary women. We are a majority women-owned company. We also have a majority women-identifying team with a majority of women in leadership/management positions. Since we opened our doors in 2009, we’ve been proud to establish and maintain long-term partnerships with some extraordinary female coffee producers.
This International Women’s Day, we want to spotlight and celebrate AMACA, a group of incredible Colombian women producers we’ve been working with since 2023. Swipe across to read about this amazing collective, and head to our Journal to learn more.

Since August last year, we have been partnering with the amazing social enterprise to recycle our coffee chaff. To date, we’ve diverted 351kg of chaff from waste through this program.
“Coffee chaff (or silverskin or husk) is the epidermis layer on green coffee, which separates throughout a roast as the beans heat up and expand,” explains our Head Roaster, Nick. “During the roasting process, the chaff gets pulled out through the exhaust and then funnelled into a designated bin.”
Every week, the Reground team visits our Brunswick East roastery to collect all our chaff. They then deliver it just up the road to Collingwood Children’s Farm, where it’s used to line the chook pen and the sheep barn, and it’s also mixed in with compost for the market garden.
We recently stopped by for a tour of the garden and a visit with the animals. It was so wonderful to see this byproduct of our coffee production being completely repurposed and put to such great use.

We're very excited to be offering El Faldón on our coffee menu for the first time. On a recent trip to Colombia, Market Lane co-founders Fleur and Jason visited producer Rubén Darío Gómez and his family on their beautiful two-hectare farm.
"One of the most amazing things about the visit was seeing Ruben's energy and entrepreneurial spirit," Fleur says. "Over the last 30 years, he's worked incredibly hard and continued to innovate and invest in his farm and supporting infrastructure in really significant ways." These innovations include the installation of an ingenious 1km-long tubing system to transport coffee cherries across the steep slopes of his farm (as pictured), and working with the local mayor to build a road into town that has been transformative for the local farming community.
Rubén's decades of hard work and dedication have resulted in some beautifully sweet, vibrant and fruit-forward coffees. In the cup, this filter lot has a bright and juicy acidity with tangelo and yellow nectarine notes. It's so good!!

It’s hard to believe it’s only been a couple of months since our wholesale partners at opened their doors – we’ve heard several of their regular customers say it feels like they’ve been part of the community for a decade! It’s not hard to see why this Apollo Bay spot has become a fast favourite among the locals. A year ago, co-owners Camille and Tristan took over the lease of a house built in 1880, and set about lovingly restoring it and giving it new life. The gorgeous, homey cafe is now open and buzzing, with plenty of seating both inside and out, and a beautiful menu of nourishing house-made meals created with mostly locally sourced, organic produce and ingredients.
Shelter is open 7 days a week from 7am. They’re serving our delicious Marimbus Espresso on the bar (and through the front window!) and they’re also retailing beans for home.

COFFEE WITH VOLKER HAUG STUDIO
If you’ve visited our Prahran Market, Sydney Rd or Mitchell House shops, you’ve likely spotted and admired the stunning and striking lights that were imagined, designed and created in Melbourne/Naarm by the visionary team at Volker Haug Studio.
As it happens, Volker Haug’s beautiful studio and showroom are located right behind our own roastery and office space in Brunswick East. We recently popped over for a tour of their space, a pat of Ruby the dog, and a coffee and chat with designer, Abdé Nouamani, about the lights Volker Haug have created for us, their diverse and dynamic team, and the role that coffee plays in the day-to-day running of their studio.

This beautiful book is back in stock! Strong Women features a collection of photos and essays spotlighting incredible Rwandan women coffee producers, telling their own stories in their own words.
“This book is about bringing to life a rarely seen side of rural African women. In most instances, they are portrayed as vulnerable. To us as their children, however, [they are] she-heroes and role models that are actively contributing to the wellbeing of families, communities, and nations” – Denyse K. Uwera (author of Strong Women)
100% of the profits from the sale of this book will be donated to ‘Supporting Strong Women’, a fundraising campaign for Rambagirakawa, a collective of women coffee producers in Northern Rwanda.
We are currently offering a beautifully complex and floral coffee from producer Victoria Mukamurenzi — a founding member of the women's collective, who is also featured in this book.

Congratulations to on opening their beautiful new shop on Smith St in Fitzroy! Our dear friend (and former Market Lane shop manager) Carmen and her partner Jack have been selling (and always selling out) their amazing bagels at Carlton Farmers Market since 2023. They’ve just opened this permanent shop space, where customers can watch bagels being rolled and shaped, and then sit and enjoy one with a cup of Market Lane coffee!
Our go-to favourites are the fresh, seasonal tomato and cultured butter bagel (with the anchovy add on), and the quark with olive oil and honey bagel, but truly you cannot go wrong with anything on Masses’ menu. Carmen, Jack and their wonderful team are now making and sharing their incredible bagels Wednesday to Sunday, 7.30am–2pm.

Victoria Mukamurenzi grew up learning how to grow coffee. “I have lived like this since my childhood,” she told us on a recent visit to her farm in Northern Rwanda. “I used to go together with my parents to the coffee fields, and I found that coffee is what made us grow as a family – it was our only source of income.”
As an adult, Victoria continued to grow coffee with her husband. In 2011, the pair joined the Dukunde Kawa Cooperative. They received training in agriculture and financial management, and they began to earn fair and reliable prices for their coffee. When several of the female co-op members founded the Rambagirakawa Women’s Alliance that same year, Victoria was one of the first people to join. She is now vice president of the group.
In 2018, Victoria decided to plant her own coffee plot. Her first harvest arrived in 2023 at some 200kg of cherry – we were lucky enough to offer it at Market Lane. By the following year, this volume had tripled. We deeply admire Victoria’s poise, intelligence and determination, and we’re very proud to share her sweet and complex coffee with you. We hope to continue to work with Victoria for many years to come!

We view tomorrow, 26 January, as a day for self-education and reflection, and for standing in firm solidarity with First Nations people.
As a company, we continue to actively educate ourselves about the history and ongoing impact of colonialism in this country; seeking out and listening to the voices and perspectives of First Nations people – not only tomorrow, but all year.
We’re deeply grateful for the cultural and historical knowledge and the personal, often painful, truths that First Nations individuals and groups have generously shared with us. We’re committed to doing what we can to be steadfast allies and walk alongside First Nations people in a movement towards positive, concrete and much-needed change.
If you're looking for a meaningful way to spend the day tomorrow, the website has a list of online and in-person events happening around the country. In our stories, we've linked to this and other important and educational material from organisations including , , , and .

How Do You Brew? with bakers Michael & Pippa James
We’ve known and admired celebrated bakers, authors and educators Michael and Pippa James for a very long time. The talented duo founded Tivoli Road Bakery, and they’ve written three beloved and internationally acclaimed cookbooks, all of which are staples in our homes.
Humble, passionate and proactive, Pippa and Michael are thought leaders and changemakers in the food world. The pair co-founded , a collective that’s focused on building a sustainable and equitable local grain economy. They also recently launched .au, an exciting initiative through which they run hands-on baking classes, teaching the wonderful recipes from their books while sharing skills and platforming native ingredients and local organic wholegrains.
We visited Pippa and Michael at home and chatted with them over a coffee about their daily coffee ritual, their perfect day off in Melbourne/Naarm, and their amazing new book, ‘Sweet Seasons: Wholesome treats for every occasion’. Head to our Journal (link in bio) to read our interview with Pippa and Michael!

Producer Mauricio Rosales established La Maravilla farm in 1997 with his late father, Guillermo. At the time, they had just 3 coffee plants and a dream of establishing a successful, progressive farm. Over the years, the pair planted the land with coffee and built the infrastructure they needed. Today, Mauricio continues the family tradition by farming with his own son, Luis.
La Maravilla is now internationally recognised as one of the best coffee farms in Guatemala. We've been lucky to offer their beautiful coffees since 2013. This season's filter lot from La Maravilla is as exquisite as expected. Look for notes of cumquat and golden syrup with a black tea finish.

Skip the caffeine but not the flavour with San Antonio, our first ever decaf coffee!
This decaf has been on offer on the bar in our shops and on our retail shelves for about a month now. We’re thrilled with how it’s tasting, and we’re loving the excitement and positive feedback we’re receiving from customers about this sweet and creamy coffee! In the cup, San Antonio Decaf has a smooth mouthfeel with notes of hazelnut, cocoa and apple. It tastes delicious both black and when paired with milk.

Have you tried San Antonio Decaf yet? This coffee was grown by small-scale producers in the steep hills surrounding the town of San Antonio in Inzá Colombia, where the volcanic soil, cool temperatures and high rainfall support the production of sweet and complex coffees. Farms in this area are typically small and the producers and their families perform most of the farmwork and wash-processing themselves. (Pictured above is Alfonso Pillimué, one of 14 producers who contributed to this lot.)
We love this decaf's smooth mouthfeel and delicious notes of hazelnut, cocoa and apple. Stop into our shops and enjoy a cup soon – it tastes amazing both on its own and when paired with our milk!

We’re very excited to be offering coffee from Rwandan producer Faustin Ribilimana and his partner Judith Kankera for the first time. Faustin is a member of the Dukunde Kawa Cooperative, and a 4th-generation producer. He is meticulous in his practices; the family's farm is one of the most methodically planted farms we’ve ever visited in Rwanda.
We selected this microlot off the cupping table on our recent trip to Rwanda, and there was immediate consensus among our sourcing team: this coffee is outstanding! We've roasted this lot for filter brewing – we love its silky texture and sweet, delicate cup profile and we hope to share Faustin’s coffees with you for many years to come.
