National Reconciliation Week, 2026: An Interview with Evelyn Schaber
During our most recent visit to Alice Springs, we were honoured to meet and speak with co-chair Evelyn Schaber. Evelyn is an Arrernte woman from Central Australia, and a senior Indigenous leader with extensive experience across governance, education and First Nations organisations. Born and raised in Mpartnwe, she has worked for over five decades in roles supporting First Nations self-determination and community led support systems.
We spoke with Evelyn about her new role with the organisation, the impact of their work, and discussed the essential, structural changes still needed to support First Nations communities across Australia.
This interview appears in the Winter 2026 edition of our Print Journal, which is available in shops and online now 💛

Limited edition Market Lane x Children's Ground Tote Bag 💛
Today is the beginning of National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June) – an opportunity for all of us to reflect on what it means to stand in solidarity with First Nations people.
Every year, the week spans two significant dates in Australia’s history: from the 1967 referendum to the High Court’s 1992 Mabo decision. This year’s theme, “All In”, calls for a sustained, collective commitment to reconciliation; it is a reminder that this work cannot solely be the responsibility of First Nations people, who have carried the violent weight of our colonial inheritance for far too long.
Throughout this week, our partners lead the “Wear it Yellow” campaign – and we will be participating once more with the return of our limited edition yellow tote bag, with 100% of proceeds going directly to the organisation and their First Nations-led education and wellbeing programs.
This special run of totes will only be available this week, in all our shops and online. Together, we can use this week as an opportunity to listen, reflect, and take action towards meaningful reconciliation.

It is with heavy hearts that we share some big news with you. Because of some very exciting renovation plans at Portland House, our tenancy at #8 Collins St will be closing for a long stint – approximately 2 years. Our last day of trade will this Friday, 22 May.
We are so sad to think that our doors won’t be opening each morning, to welcome you in and send you off – perhaps a little more optimistic and energised – for the day ahead.
We’ll be undertaking a renovation in our space during the closure and will be maintaining the Collins St shop's sense of warmth and consideration, to make sure that each of you feel as welcomed and comfortable as ever.
Our customers bring the buzz and warmth of the world to us – you are the reason we have been able to foster such a special community space. We’d like to thank you all, deeply, for your support over the years, and for your love of great coffee. We will be back!
In the meantime, you can find us in one of our shops around the city. Our closest location is at Mitchell House – and we are also so excited to share that we will be opening a new shop in Fitzroy North in June!
Thank you again and see you soon ☕️ 💙

We’re excited to share a very special coffee that was selected during a trip late last year, marking 10 years of working with Fazenda Progresso, a beautiful family-run farm in Bahia, Brazil.
We’ve named this lot “Dez Anos” (10 years) to celebrate our long-standing relationship with the Borré family. Fabiano Borré, who leads Progresso’s coffee production, jokingly declared upon tasting it that he would “marry this coffee.”
Dez Anos is now being served in-store and available online.

Back in 2024, our founders Fleur and Jason visited Rubén Darío Gómez and his wife Rosa Eleny at their beautiful farm, El Faldón. Jason took his camera to capture the memories.
Rubén always dreamed of owning a coffee farm. Growing up in the remote hills of Caicedo, he left school early, and spent over a decade travelling across Antioquia, working as a coffee picker.
Eventually, Rubén saved enough money to buy a small parcel of land near the remote village of La Noque. The farm had steep inclines and cool temperatures, and was widely considered unsuitable for coffee. Friends and family urged him to reconsider. Rubén laughs when he recalls his response: "I really had no choice."
Thankfully, Rubén persevered — and the coffee thrived! Today, Rubén and Rosa have two hectares of coffee planted on their farm. Together, they have worked tirelessly to expand their coffee plantation, continually innovating and investing in their farm and its infrastructure.
It’s a privilege to serve Rubén and Rosa’s coffee across our stores — it’s a coffee that is shaped by decades of dedication, hard work and care.

Finca Lomaverde is a farm in Antioquia, owned by our good friends and longtime Colombian export partners, the Echavarría family of Pergamino Coffee. Lomaverde is grown at a staggering 1950 metres on a site that benefits from the area's rich, volcanic soil and abundant water sources.
Pictured here is William Ortiz, the farm's manager, who oversees coffee picking and cherry delivery.
On our current menu, we have a special Chiroso lot from William and the team at Lomaverde, which has been naturally processed to elevate its sweetness and body. This coffee is particularly unique – it's rich and tropical and a joy to drink.
You can find it in all our shops and online now!

On our last trip to Kenya, we had the rare privilege of spending time in the homes of the small producers we work with, sharing a meal, chatting, and walking through their farms.
Changes to the way coffee can be bought and traded in Kenya has allowed us to build more direct relationships with these producers alongside the team . Spending time with them is truly special; we learn so much evert visit and always walk away with a deep appreciation of the hard work and effort that goes into producing exceptional coffee.
These relationships, and the chance to connect in person, are incredibly meaningful – and we appreciate so much the trust placed in us by these producers, to share their coffees and their stories.

The Alessi Pulcina Coffee Maker is our favourite stovetop brewer (and is that rare thing – a useful piece of art!)
Designed by architect Michele de Lucchi for iconic Italian design brand , we love its elegant and functional design, the pronounced spout that cuts drops while pouring, and the fact that it's sputter-free and therefore clean and kind to your cooktop.
This timeless brewer is suitable for use with gas and electric stovetops – we have two size options currently in-stock and available for purchase online and in our shops.

We are thrilled to announce that we have just recertified as a B Corp and have achieved a higher score, jumping from 96.8 to 106.9.
Since we last certified, we have implemented meaningful changes across our business – as a result, we have increased our overall impact score by 10 points and improved across all metrics.
What we love about the B Corp certification process is that there is always room for growth. Recertifying every three years holds us accountable to our own high standards, and helps us identify where we can do better: for communities, people and the planet.
Our work does not stop here! Thank you for being part of the journey so far.

These photos were taken at Ruli, the first washing station built by the pioneering Rwandan cooperative Dukunde Kawa (whose name translates to “Love Coffee”).
Dukunde Kawa don't only produce exceptional quality coffee, they also find ways to support their members through a lifetime of sustainable coffee production. We’re so proud to have worked with them for 16 consecutive years – ever since we first opened our doors at Market Lane!
Ruli is a beautiful site, and today it’s home to a café, a Women’s community building, and a brand-new early childhood development centre. Each of these buildings provide important amenity to the cooperative members and stand as a testament to the cooperative’s commitment to long-term, community-driven progress.
We've roasted this lot for filter brewing methods and it makes for really gorgeous drinking – juicy and sweet, with bright floral aromatics and notes of dried apricot and red apple. You can find it in our shops and online now.

Ruli was the first washing station built by Dukunde Kawa ("Love Coffee"), a pioneering Rwandan cooperative which has made a concerted effort to invest in infrastructure and training for their members.
Today, the Ruli station is also home to a café, a Women’s community building, and a brand-new early childhood development centre. Each of its buildings provide crucial amenities to the cooperative members and stand as a testament to the cooperative’s commitment to long-term, community-driven progress.
Our current Ruli coffee comes from peaberries grown by 180 small-scale farmers. Peaberries are small round beans that are sometimes formed inside of a coffee cherry (instead of a pair of beans that have flattened facing sides) and separated out during milling.
Rwandan peaberry coffees are celebrated for their excellent, bold character, and this one is no exception: it’s juicy and sweet, with bright floral aromatics and notes of red grape and cola. We've roasted it for filter brewing methods – you can find it in all Market Lane shops and online!

Canta Ranas is a very special coffee from the farm of Edward Sandoval in Santa Isabel, Colombia.
Pedro Echavarría of our long-time export partner describes Edwarda as ‘a rare breed of coffee producer.’ This is because Edward has accumulated years of experience working in agriculture as a technical advisor and coffee quality assessor and has poured this expertise into his farm.
Canta Ranas had been abandoned for years when Edward purchased it, but over the past decade he has meticulously updated infrastructure and refined cultivation practices to achieve better yields and produce incredibly special coffees.
We last visited Canta Ranas in November last year and were so impressed by the level of care Edward applies to all aspects of the property. This microlot is 100% Chiroso, a variety Edward loves for its uniquely floral and complex cup profile.
We've roasted this gorgeous coffee for filter brewing methods – you can find it in all Market Lane shops and online now! It has notes of peach and caramel with a juicy stone fruit acidity.
