Working Heritage

Working Heritage Working Heritage is an organization dedicated to the conservation and management of publicly-owned heritage sites in Victoria. Tasked with revitalizing significant locations, from the former Royal Mint in central Melbourne to various court houses in rural areas, Working Heritage ensures these sites maintain purpose and care for future generations. The organization focuses on managing government-owned properties that have outlived their original functions, transforming them into new, functional spaces. Through partnerships with tenants, Working Heritage promotes the preservation of cultural significance while adapting buildings for contemporary needs—turning abandoned structures into vibrant establishments like restaurants, museums, and theaters. This approach not only sustains the care of heritage sites but also fosters economic development and community engagement within rural towns and cities.

Justin Calverley is coming to Farm Vigano 🌳✂️

A fully qualified horticulturist with more than 35 years of industry experience, Justin has been running pruning workshops across Melbourne for over 15 years and is widely regarded as one of the state’s leading horticultural educators. Announcing a very special occasion by our incredible tenants at the South Melbourne Temperance Hall happening next Friday 15 May.

Renée Copraij and Phillip Adams in Conversation, facilitated by Rebecca Hilton!

They met in the 90s while working in New York for Dennis O Connor. Over the past three decades they have continued to work at the radical, avant-garde edge of dance and performing arts practices.

Through this conversation, facilitated by Rebecca Hilton, Renée and Phillip reflect on their intersecting and disparate experiences of shaping and influencing experimental performing arts scenes, locally and internationally.

Perhaps, they might even do a dance…

What people say

Working Heritage plays a vital role in preserving and revitalizing some of Victoria's most cherished heritage sites. With a commitment to conservation and management, they breathe new life into historically significant buildings, ensuring that these treasures are not only preserved but also adapted for contemporary use.

From the iconic former Royal Mint in central Melbourne to charming court houses in rural towns, Working Heritage transforms redundant structures into vibrant community assets. Their innovative approach allows for the repurposing of these sites—turning a derelict farmhouse into a delightful restaurant or a decommissioned mint into an engaging museum. This thoughtful adaptation not only honors the cultural significance of these places but also meets modern needs, creating spaces that resonate with both locals and visitors alike.

By collaborating with tenants who lease these heritage sites, Working Heritage fosters sustainable uses that contribute positively to the community. The revitalization of these buildings supports local businesses and enhances community activities, making them integral parts of their neighborhoods. Each project undertaken by Working Heritage reflects their dedication to maintaining the unique character and history of Victoria while ensuring that these places continue to thrive for future generations.

In essence, Working Heritage is transforming how we view our historical landmarks—seeing them as valuable resources rather than mere relics of the past. Their efforts not only preserve our heritage but also enrich our communities, making them more vibrant and connected through shared history and culture.
