Since we first aired âEvery Cup Countsâ in 2023, commodity coffee more than doubled, hitting an all time high of over $4USD/lb in 2025. Even then, it was still a fraction of its 1970s price adjusted for inflation. Since then prices have trended down, and we canât help but notice a lot of roasters and cafes sighing a breath of relief. But that just puts us back where we started. One or two good years isnât enough for a farmer to build a long term viable business.
So whatâs the alternative? Pay the price the farmer actually needs. Not just enough to cover cost of production, but enough to turn a profit, and reinvest for the future. We call this partnership coffee. Really itâs just how coffee should work when everyone in the value chain gets fair value.

Since we released Every Cup Counts, our documentary on the story of Zukuka Bora, back in 2023, the commodity coffee market has more than doubled. It hit record highs of over $4 USD a pound last year.
Thatâs still short of $12 USD a pound, the inflation-adjusted price coffee traded at in the 1970s. And itâs already dropping back again.
We hear the same conversation on repeat. Coffeeâs too expensive. Coffeeâs overvalued. Prices have gone mad.
Meanwhile weâre still paying less for it than we were fifty years ago. The people growing it have spent decades being paid as though time stood still. So maybe the real question isnât why coffee costs $6 a cup. Maybe itâs why we ever expected it to stay so cheap for so long.

To reach the coffee shop at Progress Street in Mornington by public transport, take the bus or train to Mornington Station. From there, walk south on Main Street towards Homer Street and turn left onto Homer Street. Continue on this road until you reach the intersection with Progress Street.
If driving to the coffee shop, take Nepean Highway and turn onto Main Street towards Mornington. Turn right onto Tanti Avenue and continue straight until you reach the intersection with Progress Street. Parking is available on the street or in nearby parking lots.
