Ostrich & the Egg Ostrich & the Egg was a beloved family-owned South African food truck, known for its focus on iconic street food with authentic and reimagined flavors. The menu featured scratch-made dishes with rotating seasonal specials, including the popular Cape Malay koeksister doughnuts. The casual dining experience was filled with good vibes and South African humor that made patrons feel at home. Unfortunately, Ostrich & the Egg has been permanently closed.

Our “pickle fish salsa” is the yellow sauce you see.
Pickle fish is uniquely South African which combines the fish, spices, onions and oil that form the dish as a whole - and only eaten at Easter. (Cape communities)

There is no such thing as “pickle fish salsa” - South Africans will tell you that.

Until now.

We believe the sweet sour turmeric base spice is too good to wait once a year to eat. So we’ve turned it into a cool sauce for our fish mini roti.

It’s been described as similar in to mango chutney by a Sri Lankan guy and a South African customer said it sounds as though it shouldn’t work, but it does.

It’ll be running again on our menu this Sunday at Boatrocker Brewers Distillers - deets in bio

Keen to know how you would describe the pickle fish flavour?

(Sneak peek st our new truck colour too btw)

Full menu:
Lamb bunny chow
Boerewors cheeseburger
Pickle fish mini roti
Potato samoosas
Cape Town doughnuts (koesisters)

Pap battered boerewors mini skewer, chakalaka
Biltong dust pâté - cream cheese vibe, fresh baguette
Bean bobotie, roti, masala aioli, curry leaf
