As a first time visitor to Uruguay, you have been a treat!!! I have a greater understanding of Marty's culture, upbringing and family traditions. Luckily I have travelled with interpreters (Marty and his family) as there is NO English! Although I can understand a lot, I have no idea most of the time.
I can definitely say I have sampled a Uruguayan chivito that's for sure and made the most of their repedative menu options... I am ready for some veges!!!
The joy of seeing supermarket aisles full of yerba mate, hot water machines for thermos refills, rows and endless choices of dulce de leche, sunsets on the rambla to late-night chivitos, friendly locals, mate on every corner and the social connection of gathering for a mate, it seems everyone has a picnic chair ready to pick a spot and stop for a mate .
The food, the culture, the relaxed pace, and the family atmosphere have been something special ❤️

El Chivi PLAYER OF THE WEEK
This rounds player of the week goes to our hattrick hero Alistair Jones.
Esky was on fire on Saturday in the ressies and his clinical finishing helped the ressies register a 4-1 win.

Day 6: Sun, Salt, and a Stadium full of chaos. 🇺🇾⚽️
We started with a slow morning stroll along the Río de la Plata, just soaking up the Montevideo sunshine. It was the calm before the absolute storm that was the rest of our day. ☀️🌊
For lunch, we hit La Otra Parrilla for a proper feast. We went all in: Asado de tira, vacio, chinchulines, and that local specialty—morcilla dulce. 🥩🔥
If you haven’t tried the sweet blood sausage here, you’re missing out. Safe to say we were in a serious food coma afterwards.
We had to walk it off, though, because we were heading to the main event: Nacional playing at home. 🏟️ The energy was pure madness. The crowd, the singing, the passion—the atmosphere was mental. Nothing beats South American football. 🔵⚪️🔴

Day 5: High points and hidden gems. 🇺🇾⛰️
We started at El Cerro de Montevideo, taking in the panoramic views and the historic fortress. It’s easily one of the most iconic vantage points in the city.
For lunch, we finally followed the advice of almost every Uber driver we’ve had and hit up El Bar Tinkal. 🥪 The verdict? The drivers didn't lie. This Chivito is officially a contender for the top spot in Montevideo. 🏆
The highlight of the trip happened in the evening, though. We were welcomed into the home of Maximilian and Sara for an authentic Asado experience. 🪵🔥 From the ritual of building the fire to the patience required for the perfect cuts of meat, they walked us through every step of the process. There is nothing quite like sharing a meal and a story in someone's home. Truly an unforgettable night. 🍷🥩

Day 3 - Checking off the Montevideo bucket list, one massive sandwich at a time. 🇺🇾
Waking up to a street market at our front door was the ultimate morning mood, even with a 4am wake up 😅
After a slow stroll through Carrasco, we finally sat down at Bar Arocena for the main event: The Chivito. 🍔
It’s legendary for a reason—huge, greasy, and enough cheese to put you in a happy food coma. (A little extra salt and it would’ve been 11/10).
We ended the day high above the streets at the Intendencia lookout. There is no better way to get your bearings in this city than seeing it all from above. ☁️✨

Day 2 - Eating intestines!
A carnivore’s pilgrimage to the heart of Montevideo - Mercado del Puerto.
We did it properly today: starting with the appetizers—Chorizo, Chinchulines (intestines), Morcilla (blood sausage), and Mollejas (sweetbreads).
Followed that up with the classic Asado short ribs, and naturally, couldn't leave without some award-winning Alfajores for the road.
The wood-fire scent stays with you, but the meal is worth it. 🇺🇾

Melbourne → Sydney → Santiago → Montevideo, Uruguay — 24 hours later and we made it 🇺🇾
No better way to land than heading straight to Costa Azul for our first chivito. A little plain tbh but still worth the journey and looking forward to many more 🍔

In 2026 you’ll see the El Chivi logo displayed via signage around the club and through our social media platforms, along with some exciting player of the round supported initiatives.

El Chivi is Melbourne’s first and only Uruguayan steak sandwich “Chivito food truck”.
The chivito “The apex of the sandwich making arts” as quoted by Anthony Bourdain is the unofficial national dish of Uruguay. Much like fish and chips to the UK, burgers to America, the chivito is to Uruguay and now they bring it to Melbourne to revolutionize the way we eat steak sandwiches.
Established in 2015, El Chivi Food truck uses locally sourced ingredients, quality scotch fillet steak, melting in your mouth and tender to eat, using only the freshest and finest salad and pickled ingredients, layered on freshly baked artisan bread. All of this is done from their distinctive food truck inspired by the rustic houses of Colonia, Uruguay. Be sure to check them out at their hangout, details below.

Seeing Double!
Double Hat-trick, Double Dangler, = Double El Chivi
Some fantastic clutch finals performances last weekend from these two legends. Maha with an incredible double hatrick and five wickets to see us through to the big dance. Spides with a bag of 5, man of the match double dangler, to get the Sharks home for a 3rd XI premiership.
We couldn't help but award double El-Chivi player of the round awards this week.
