Our Good Start program began last year, giving local young people hands-on, supportive and paid experience across our social enterprises, including our cafes.
Since then, more than 20 young people have stepped into real paid roles, building skills in hospitality, customer service, coffee‑making, food prep, catering and so much more, all while growing the confidence they need to find further work.
So come by, grab something delicious from our menu, or check out our catering options, and support our local young people!

What people say
Common Bean Cafe, located on Pearcedale Parade in Broadmeadows, is a restaurant with a difference. It is a social enterprise initiative led by Banksia Gardens Community Services that provides young people from Hume with transitional employment opportunities and on-the-job training every six months. During their placement at Common Bean Cafe, the young participants gain accredited training in hospitality and general employability skills, six months of paid work experience, and an increased sense of confidence which will allow them to obtain employment independently in the future.
The cafe's mission to combat youth unemployment in the community is commendable. With youth unemployment levels currently at 27.2% in Broadmeadows, Common Bean Cafe's efforts to provide meaningful employment and training to young people are truly making a difference.
Apart from its social impact, Common Bean Cafe also serves delicious coffee and food. So come down to Dianella Community Health GP Superclinic, enjoy a cup of coffee or a meal, and support this worthy cause. By doing so, you'll be helping to combat youth unemployment while also treating yourself to some tasty treats!
