Anyone here a fan of Son House? The Son House Tribute Festival is this weekend! Come see Grammy nominee Jontavious Willis and BMA nom Erin Harpe - Roots & Blues play Saturday 5/29 8pm at the The Holy Moly, a super cool hidden gem downtown.

🎶 Friday 5/30 7pm at Hambone is Cash's Juke Joint, Deak Harp & Watermelon Slim. More events and details are on the festival website, including...

Who was Son House?

"Born in the Clarksdale area in 1903, Son House was a Delta blues legend whose influence still shapes music today. He mentored icons like Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson, and his sound can be heard in artists such as Bonnie Raitt, Jack White, and Taj Mahal.

After stepping away from music in the 1940s, Son House was rediscovered in 1964, leading to a powerful late-career revival."

We're so proud he's among the legends who were born and influenced here -- and love how this new festival is honoring him. Kudos to Dr. B, Kayleigh, and the whole Blue Room & Son House team! 💙

One my favourite bands back in Sydney 86 87 .. often caught them at Caringbah Inn ..

Formed in Sydney in 1981, the Australian pub rock band v. Spy v. Spy became one of the most politically outspoken acts of the 1980s music scene. Originally influenced by ska before moving towards a harder pub rock sound, the band was made up of Craig Bloxom, Mike Weiley and Cliff Grigg. At a time when many Australian rock groups focused mainly on partying and rebellion, v. Spy v. Spy stood apart through songs that confronted serious social and political issues. Their music tackled racism, homelessness, drug addiction, consumerism and injustice, often reflecting the struggles of ordinary Australians. Their fierce live performances and socially conscious lyrics earned them a loyal following on the pub circuit, where they developed a reputation as a passionate and energetic act.

The band’s rise coincided with a politically charged period in Australia during the 1980s, and their songs captured the frustrations and anxieties felt by many young Australians. Unlike polished pop acts of the era, v. Spy v. Spy delivered raw, direct commentary through powerful guitar-driven rock. Their debut album Harry’s Reasons in 1986 explored themes such as he**in addiction and the treatment of Indigenous Australians, helping establish the group as more than just another pub band. They were frequently compared with politically minded Australian acts such as Midnight Oil, although v. Spy v. Spy often approached issues from a more street-level perspective.

Their greatest commercial success arrived with the single “Don’t Tear It Down”, released from the 1986 album A.O. Mod. TV. Vers.. Inspired by threats to demolish the band’s Sydney squat residence, the song became an anthem against reckless urban development and social displacement. In early 1987, the track climbed the Australian charts and became their highest-charting single, remaining popular for months and earning strong radio airplay. The success of the song helped push the album into the Australian Top 20 and brought the band wider national recognition.

Although mainstream success was relatively brief, v. Spy v. Spy left a lasting mark on Australian rock music. Their willingness to confront controversial topics gave them an identity that separated them from many of their contemporaries. Even decades later, the band is remembered for combining the toughness and energy of pub rock with meaningful social commentary, creating music that was both entertaining and thought-provoking.
