When Peter and Sandy opened La Bodega in the heart of St Kilda, they weren’t simply launching another restaurant. They were creating a place where their two worlds—culinary craft and Latin dance culture—could meet in one vibrant, welcoming space.
Peter’s journey began long before La Bodega. With years of hospitality experience working as a chef in both Australia and overseas, he developed a deep respect for fresh ingredients, bold flavours and the kind of food that brings people together. His menu at La Bodega reflects that philosophy:Dominican classics such as La Bandera, Tostones, Mangu, crispy pork belly with a tropical twist, mofongo and yuca chips prepared with care and entirely Gluten Free, with weekly specials that keep regulars coming back. Even the exclusive Keloke Beer(gf) adds a playful nod to Dominican life. Diners can also enjoy a game of Dominoes, echoing the afternoon routines that have been ingrained into the Caribbean culture.
But La Bodega’s story is just as much Sandy’s. A celebrated Latin dancer with competition credentials and extensive teaching experience, she has spent years travelling to the Dominican Republic to study the roots of bachata and Dominican dance culture. Her passion became Bachata Fever Dance, running weekly Salsa and Bachata classes at La Bodega. Every second Friday the restaurant transforms into a social hub where diners can enjoy a meal, then step straight into a bachata class or join the evening’s social dancing.
The venue has quickly become a favourite for corporate events, birthdays and social celebrations for young and old, offering something rare in Melbourne: a place where people don’t just dine—they connect, move and celebrate.
