Awww Helmi we were so honoured to have you celebrate your 103rd birthday with us at Babajis yesterday!

Without a doubt, you are the wisest to have walked through our doors…. what you must have seen through the decades … and to hear you have a little soft spot for South India having spent so much time there in a Kerala past. 🫶

We’re inspired…
… and feel very honoured to have had the opportunity to cook for you.

Happy 103 years around this globe Helmi.

Six weeks ago … Chef Shyamal, was just 24 hrs away from heading home to Sri Lanka for a month.

I posted about it here … then got the phone call from Chef Jithin:…

🧑‍🍳 ‘You don’t know do you?’

‘WHAT don’t I know?!?!?!’

🧑‍🍳 ‘Shyamal’s had a crash … he’s been taken to the Alfred Trauma Unit’!!!
(When Shyamal’s gets enthusiastic about something, this time the new - he’s all in!).

Silence (unusual for me)

Turns out, he’d got himself:

💥 9 fractured ribs
💥 Fractured shoulder blade
💥 Lung damage

He wasn’t getting on a plane. 🤯

6 weeks on, it was great to have him back yesterday… still on the mend, starting with just for a few shifts a week.

We’ve lots of folk we’d like to thank - for getting him off the tracks - into hospital … and now helping him get back to normal (if such a thing exists for Shyamal).

Thank you to our mate Matt (relieved you were up there with him), the Mountain Bike track team, the SES Upper Yarra Unit for rescuing him, the Birrarung Swimmers for being so caring and regularly checking in on him and local Exercise Physiologist, Rachel from for getting him back to full strength.

This time, we’re all lucky.

Thank you community for having Shyamal (& Babaji’s back).

(Shyamal’s story shared with his permission.)

We’re open today for lunch & dinner.

It’s Saturday … and that means our Kerala biryani’s cooking.!
We know you’re sad when you visit us during the week and the biryani pot is empty. 🥺

WHY do we do that?
Because we cook our biryani traditionally - low and slow - and not ‘on the spot, to order’ … as many Indian restaurants do.
That’s not biryani - it’s ‘flavoured rice’. 😣

And being in a regional tourist town, we can be very unpredictable. Busy for no reason… and mysteriously quiet when we ‘should’ be busy.

So - decision made - biryani available JUST on Saturday and Sunday and when it’s gone - It’s gone.

If it hasn’t sold out on Sunday night - head to our online take away, you’ll see it there - it’ll be going cheap. Just $20.

We’re not looking so busy today. Who truly knows? Walk ins should be fine. Bookings always help us.

🐟🦐 TOMORROW - Pollichathu Sunday. From 12.30 until sold out.
