Throwback to the early days and sharing a few of the many write-ups we received in that first year of opening.

We’re incredibly grateful to the food writers, reviewers and photographers who took the time to visit and profile our little Moorabbin venue.

Opening during a period of lockdowns, restrictions and uncertainty for hospitality was something we never could have planned for. But the exposure these pieces gave us helped get our name out there and brought many new faces through our doors.

At the time, it all felt pretty surreal, and so unexpected. The excitement of opening up the paper and seeing your name and Matthew Woodhouse incredible food will stay with us always! Thank you x

Lucky for camera roll timestamps because this time feels like such a blur. Before any food, wine and patrons in the dining room, there was this.

An empty site, remnants of an old aquarium (who remembers this?) a half-finished build, and the original mural our mate and artist Chia Chia painted on the external wall.

Unfortunately once the mural was finished, we stood back and realised it looked a lot like COVID germs 🦠. Given it was a highly controversial subject at the time, we decided we had to repaint and start over. Sorry Chia 🫣

Looking back at these photos we remember the big dreams, excitement, blood and sweat, long days and nights and a feeling of stepping into the unknown. Our kids were still little, the venue was still just an idea taking shape, and we can admit now we were pretty unprepared for what was to come.

Six years later, it’s pretty special to look back at where it all started and see how far we came.

🥩 Steak night is still here 🥩

We shared some big news yesterday, but tonight is business as usual - we’re grilling steak over coal, pouring wine, and getting ready for a busy Wednesday service.

🥩 O’Connor pasture-fed hanger $40
🥩 Oakey F1 Wagyu MB9+ rump $50

Both served with triple cooked chips and zucchini slaw to share.

If you’ve been meaning to come back for a midweek steak and a glass of red to cure the winter blues, we’d love to see some faces old and new in the room tonight 💚

Bookings online, walk-ins welcome.

We have some news to share... the time has come for us to say goodbye.
This was an extremely tough decision for us to make, but after nearly 6 years, Comma Food and Wine will be closing its doors for good.

We signed the lease in March 2020, with little clue of what was ahead, which ended up being nearly 2 years of impacts from a global pandemic. And who could’ve predicted that?
Being a new business we managed to thrive beyond this and achieved some amazing highs that we never dreamt possible. But with those highs also came with some challenges and a lot of sacrifice.

Running a small business means you never quite switch off. You’re always thinking ahead to tomorrow’s orders, next week’s bills and next month’s revenue. Over the years there seems to have always been another hurdle or cost increase. We navigated lockdowns, rising wages, increasing rent, utilities, supplier costs, and a cost of living crisis that has hit our industry particularly hard. Like so many small business owners, we kept telling ourselves that the easier times were coming just around the corner.

But we’ve made the difficult decision to close so that we can focus on our health, our wellbeing, and our family. And whilst tough, we feel at peace with the decision.

We are so proud of what we built. Comma became so much more than a restaurant. It became the place where this community celebrated the everyday and special moments. We shared proposals, anniversaries, milestone birthdays, first dates, long lunches and late nights. Being there for those times has been a huge privilege.

We’re excited to be welcoming a new venue operator to the space and cannot wait to see what they bring to the neighbourhood.

To every single person who dined with us, recommended us, or simply made Comma part of your routine - thank you. Every booking, every kind word or review, every familiar face meant so much to us.

We would love to see you one last time before final service early next month. Come as you are, let’s share a glass, and let’s go out the way we came in… together.

With so much love and gratitude,
Adam, Megan, and the team at Comma 💚
