Most of what goes into a plate here happens before it ever reaches you. The slicing, the plating, the few seconds a barista spends getting the pour to sit just right. You don't really see any of it, and honestly you're not meant to. We just care that when it lands in front of you, it's the best version of itself.
That's the whole idea behind the food at Kaede. Take something simple, a katsu, a matcha, a coffee, and give it the time it deserves. It's a quiet kind of pride, but it's in everything we send out.

Kaede, KA-E-DE. Maple Tree, in Japanese.
The name comes from Yuki's love of nature, and that's the whole feeling of the place. Greenery tucked everywhere, warm and cosy, somewhere you actually want to slow down. 🍁
Now you know.

Before the rush, the corner is still. Blue sky over old brick, doors about to open, the smell of the first brew coming through. This is our favourite hour, come catch it with us.

Bright green, stone-ground matcha, whisked smooth and served in our handmade cups. Earthy, a little sweet, a steadier lift than coffee. The calm way to begin a morning.

The first dish was chicken katsu sando.
Kaede's early menu came together with the help of Fujio, who helped put the first dishes on paper.
Egg sando, chicken katsu sando, both landed well from the start.
From there it evolved, and now Yuki writes every recipe herself.
That's five years of a menu finding its own voice.

Green tea, whisked slow until it turns bright and smooth. Earthy, a little sweet, quietly good for you. A calmer kind of caffeine, the sort of drink you sit with, not skull.

I saw Kaede in The Age Good Food Guide and I had to sit down for a second.
When we started, I never imagined this. All I wanted was to make food I was proud of and have people actually enjoy it. The fact that you keep coming back, and bring the people you love with you, means more than I know how to put into words.
So thank you. Really. This is yours too.
