Many visitors to our cafe stop to admire our huge historic photograph and wonder who is pictured in it.
🔎 The woman in the photo is Mrs Dandy with her daughters Connie and Betty, a local family who owned the haberdashery where Mont Flora is now! The Dandy family were English migrants who made Montmorency their home. You can also see young Connie in the reel on her own, with the station and the old milk bar at the bottom of the hill behind her.
📖 Historical info supplied by Imelda Brown, who came to Montmorency in November 1965. She credited details about the photograph to the book: The Farm on the Plenty, by local author Maureen Jones.

Next time you’re visiting Monty Cafe & Restaurant for our brunches or Indian dinner, imagine Were Street over 100 years ago surrounded by farmland and orchards...
The arrival of the school, railway station, general store and post office helped shape the Montmorency we know and love today. One local story is of Jack the Alsatian, who was trained to collect newspapers from the train at 3pm. He'd deliver them back to his owners, Mr and Mrs Musselwhite who ran the local post office in Were St from roughly the mid 1930s to 1950.
❤️ Stay tuned — in two days we’ll share the beautiful historic photograph that hangs in our café, along with the fascinating mystery behind the people captured in the image... as shared by one of our lovely locals!
