This month, we’re shining a spotlight on Mid Square Coffee in Carlton.
Jeff and Jess took over the café in 2018 after making the move from Sydney to Melbourne. In a city renowned for its incredible coffee culture and countless exceptional roasters, we’re incredibly grateful they chose to partner with us and have remained part of the Vacation Coffee family ever since.
Over the years, we’ve shared countless coffees, conversations, ideas, challenges, and laughs. Their commitment to consistency, genuine hospitality, and creating a welcoming space for their local community is something we deeply admire.
We recently sat down with Jeff and Jess to learn more about their journey, what inspires them, and what makes Mid Square such a special place.

Another coffee with a personal connection. 🌱
Back in 2012, Jimmy Tjoeng, our Head Roaster, travelled to a coffee farm in Kintamani, Bali 🇮🇩 — and was puzzled by how rare Indonesian coffees were in Australia.
Now, roasting this Bali Kintamani batch feels like completing a full circle.
Produced by , 377 smallholder farmers across an altitude of 1,200 MASL — this coffee has undergone a natural process and anaerobic fermentation. The outcome is a vibrant, fruit-rich cup with bright acidity, sweet notes, and a fuller-bodied feel.

This coffee holds a personal connection to our Co-Founder, Jimmy, who grew up in Bandung, West Java — just an hour from the Java Frinsa farm in Pengalengan.
In 2023, he visited Wildan Mustofa of the Java Frinsa Collective, whose innovative, experimental processing continues to elevate Indonesian coffee.🌱

Take the train and get off at Flinders Street Station. Walk along Swanston Street and turn right onto Bourke Street. Continue on Bourke Street and turn left onto Exhibition Street. Walk for about 200 meters until you reach the destination.

Head to Melbourne CBD and look for a parking garage or a street parking spot near Exhibition Street. Once parked, walk towards Exhibition Street, which is located in the heart of Melbourne CBD. The coffee shop is situated between two major intersections, so it shouldn't be difficult to find once you are on Exhibition Street.
