He may bear the name of jazz royalty, but saxophonist Ravi Coltrane blows an original and distinctly modern strain of jazz.

This week at Lowie Live!!

We start with our much-loved Irish Session on Tuesday night. You know the drill...a bunch of wonderful local musicians play Irish music just because they love it. From 8pm.

On Wednesday night we welcome back Lomond Acoustica presenting two acts. You get to see Kelly Auty Music and Brian Fraser, AND Ben Rogers' Instrumental Asylum!!
Kelly Auty is renowned for her powerhouse performances and her show-girl versatility. She is a favourite on the Australian music scene.
Kelly has always enjoyed duo performances, and has recently joined with her guitarist, Brian Fraser. Brian is one of Australia’s finest & most well-recognized acoustic blues performers & a multi-award-winning artist with over 30 years’ experience in the music industry.

Ben Rogers' Instrumental Asylum

Ben (guitar), Nikki Scarlett (bass), Denis Close (drums & percussion).
Formed back in 2005 to play reverb-drenched instrumentals influenced by the 60s surf guitar genre. 25 years and 5 albums later their diverse influences have resulted in a broad repertoire with original material sitting alongside surf, rock, and blues classics like Ginchy and Hideaway and jazz standards like John Coltrane’s Mr P.C. and Billy Strayhorn’s Take the A Train. 8pm $10

Come Friday night we present The Blue Souls. For 25 years now, the Blue Souls have been bringing the Chicago Blues roots to the Melbourne music scene. Expect the amplified harmonica with songs you can dance to and good ol’ blue classics. together with a little something new and a fresh set of vocals from Lomond local, Marty Horstead. 9pm $15

Saturday features another Double Header for your listening enjoyment.
At 5pm Geoff Achison Music and Nick Charles Music take the stage. Geoff Achison – 1995 Albert King Award winner for Best Guitarist – is renowned for his dynamic fingerpicking, fiery technique, and emotionally charged performances. Deeply rooted in the American blues tradition, he brings a style that's equal parts delta blues, southern soul and New Orleans funk.
Nick Charles – 2024 recipient of the Best Guitarist Award – is a fingerstyle virtuoso whose mastery of the guitar has earned him international recognition. With a deft touch and a refined, yet raw sound, Charles creates a space where every note feels both personal and profound.

At 9pm the Damien Ellis trio pick up the sticks...literally! Damien whittled his drumsticks in the smoky glow of New York's underground jazz joints.
Now a regular at the Melbourne International and Wangaratta Jazz Festivals, Damien took home the title of Australia’s Best Up and Coming Drummer in 2009 and has never looked back. Teaming up with Olaf Scott and Jordan Tarento, this trio blends the timeless with the cutting edge, transporting listeners to the era of hard bop jazz and beyond. 9pm $15

Finally on Sunday we present The Chilli Pickers, featuring veteran Melbourne musos Jane McCracken on vocals and guitar, Kate Connor on fiddle and harmonies (Devil Goat Family String Band, Andy Baylor), Gus Macmillan on banjo (Blue Grassy Knoll and Devil Goat Family String Band) and Keith Urquhart on Double Bass. The intertwining of fiddle and banjo, haunting vocal harmonies, and lyrics that are both timeless and true, make this band mesmerising and energising in equal parts, like moonshine and mountain dew! 5pm $15

Prepare yourself... Prayerbabies are back on Saturday night!! Once again Dan is challenging us to decipher this:
"SATDY P-BABIES are the fresh faux food (made out of) people!
Taking a leaf out of a Coolsworth’s soggy lettuce, we’re slashing the entry fee by a full 50%* down, down, down to an always low $15**, one night only for this, our first gig for 25^.
B luffly 2 c u, duopolese notwithstanding…
###e’en"
Yep, like Dan said. When you see them you will understand!!! 9pm $15

Over to Sunday where the wonderful City Soul R***e begin their residency! The Moreland City Soul R***e (MCSR) was conceived when founding members Jed Pickett (guitar) and Adrian Whitehead (Hammond organ) attended a protest rally at Trades Hall. They added the rhythm section Brothers, Tim (bass) and Sam (drums), who were quick to jump on board. They enlisted Jacob Cole (guitar). These three newcomers were excited about the potential of this group in promoting the community spirit that their council embodies. Finally this protest band, a vehicle to voice their concerns with the global political climate, took an interesting twist when they approached former Pornland front man and vocalist Slatty D, who pointed out “The people don’t want to hear about our disillusionment with the inadequacies of government, local or otherwise. What they really need is soul.” The MCSR was born!
Don't miss this one! 5pm $20
